Here is an example of birth preferences - this may give you some ideas of what to include/not include in your birth preferences and how to word your requests.

Birth Preferences

The information below shows our birth preferences. We have given careful consideration to each specific request and feel that it represents our wishes at this time. We realise that as labour progresses, we may choose to change our thinking and wish to feel free to do so. These preferences presume a normal pregnancy and birth. Should any special circumstances arise which constitute a medical emergency we will wish to have sufficient time to discuss the options between ourselves before making a decision.

Our overriding plan is to utilise the hypnobirthing method of a quiet, relaxed and natural vaginal birth and all requests below are in place to support this approach.

• People present
People present at the birth should only be the midwife, myself and my partner.

• Location
We wish to give birth at home. We will call for a midwife at the appropriate time, however will not proceed to hospital or attempt to delay the birth if a midwife is delayed or unavailable.

• Environment
We will be creating a relaxing and comforting environment for labour and birth and ask that this environment is respected and not challenged by any people present
o Birthing Pool
We will be utilising a birthing pool (from the active birth centre as recommended by midwives) before and/or during labour
o Music
We will be playing relaxation music and possibly hypnosis scripts during labour
o Lighting
We will have subdued lighting
o Food
Food will be available both for myself during labour and for any people present

• Use of drugs
As a general principle, drugs should only be administered in the event of a medical emergency and after consultation with myself and my partner.

• Pain relief
Through hypnobirthing, I shall be utilising the bodies own mechanism of pain control, therefore only in the event of a medical emergency and after consultation with myself and my partner should any pain relief be prescribed. In addition, it is extremely useful if the term pain, hurt or similar negative emotions could be refrained from being discussed during labour.

• Speeding up labour
Through hypnobirthing, I shall be utilising the bodies own mechanisms for producing oxytocin, no artificial means will be required unless there is a medical emergency and only following consultation with myself and my partner

• During labour
I shall be utilising breathing techniques specific to hypnobirthing, therefore coaching will not be required other than from my partner.

• Inducing Labour
Labour should only be artificially induced if labour if there is a medical emergency. In the event that it is not a medical emergency, we would like for the baby to be closely monitored with a view to progressing with a natural birth.

• Following the birth
The sex of the baby should be announced by my partner

There should be immediate skin to skin contact with me to allow breast feeding to commence and to progress the delivery of the placenta.

The cord should be clamped/cut only after pulsation has ceased.

The cord should be cut by my partner.

The placenta should also be delivered naturally – only under special circumstances should medical intervention be required and only after consultation with myself and my partner.

• Vitamin K
No vitamin K should be administered to the baby after birth unless there is a medical emergency and only following consultation with myself and my partner

• Special circumstances
In the event that a C Section birth has been required due to a medical emergency:
o My partner be allowed to remain with me in the operating room.
o The baby should be passed directly to my partner for skin to skin contact and bonding.
